Eggs again and cake disaster

Those eggs I found the other day ended up in the compost, I cracked open 3 or 4 and they weren't at all fresh so out they all went. The girls are now being considerate and laying in the nesting boxes again and I got 3 today, so no shortage of supply.

Yesterday I made an orange and lemon poppy seed cake, but it was a slight disaster (no photo!) as I stupidly didn't realise I had the oven set on grill................. doh! Once I realised I turned it to bake and although I chopped the over browned (aka burnt) top off, the texture wasn't the greatest, quite crumbly and it also didn't come out of the pan well. Yikes what a muck up, just as well it wasn't an important little boys birthday cake!

  1. Look at it this way at least you put the right ingredients into your cake - unlike me one forgetful afternoon when I made a chocolate cake minus the flour? Have a look at a blog called Cake Wrecks some time. It's hilarious. Yes I threw some eggs into the compost myself yesterday. Yet another hoarded pile of Maggies.
    Take care

  2. It must be a day for cake mishaps - I tried a double batch of a new chocolate cake recipe and they failed monumentally, first spilling out of the tin and then collapsing. No idea what I did wrong but I won't be able to sell them at the Boot Fair which was the plan. I've been nibbling bits of the spilt mixture all day and it tastes OK so I might try and make some sort of trifle out of it.

(And the word verification is Porki - what I will be if I keep nibbling :-0

  3. Hi Liz
Some pretty shocking cakes on that website for sure! The chooks have been fronting up with the eggs in the nesting boxes recently, got some big double yolkers too!

    Hi Rosie
Very disappointing isn't it esp. when you make double the batch! Better luck next time. Perhaps you put too much mixture in the pans, if it spilt over and then sunk in the middle - probably wasn't quite cooked in the middle I'd guess. Hope you had better luck 2nd time round for selling at the fair.

  4. Despite cake disaster the boot fair went really well. I sold almost all the cakes, 2/3 of my plants and various other things. Now I'm planning the next one.

  5. Hi Rosie
That's great the boot fair was a success. We have quite stringent rules for selling at markets over here, if I wanted to sell food - jams, cakes etc I'd have to prepare them in a council certified kitchen, which unfortunately I don't have!
Best of luck for the next one.
