We've been doing well with our strawberry harvest so far, getting about 2 punnets a day. The birds are a slight problem since we haven't put netting over the berry patches, mainly because they are planted along banks etc. However we have plenty so the loss is minimal! Some nice big ones too as per the photo.
yum! perfect with icing sugar ;-)
ReplyDeleteThey're delicious, Dylan especially loves them
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a similar bumper crop to the one I had this year - all now a distant memory. The only red in my strawberry patch is the leaves. Mind you there are plenty of frozen and bottled ones to eat so I might get some out to mix with the apples my neighbour gave me. Apple and strawberry crumble - yum!

OT: Sorry to post here. I didn't think you'd notice a comment to such an old post.
ReplyDeleteJust read your post about making rangpur lime marmalade. I have a small RL tree here in Oakland CA USA, which has just yielded a large crop: about 3 kg harvested so far with another 2 kg to go. Yours is the only recipe on the web for true RL marmalade; others use lots of lemons. If I reckon right, you use 2 kg of sugar for each kg of fruit, which looks very sweet to me. I usually use about 1 kg sugar for each kg of fruit for such recipes. My SurGel pectin package recommends about the same.
How did the marmalade come out?
Hi Jon
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear you have a good amount of fruit from your rangpur lime tree. I don't think they can be very common, I was very fortunate to be given a couple of fruit and grew my trees from the seeds (see this post - http://cabbagetreefarm.blogspot.com/2008/08/limes.html)
Anyway, the marmalade turned out really well, I didn't find it too sweet as the limes are really really sour.
Good luck with yours, I'd be interested to hear back from you as to how it went.
Best wishes
Bridget
Hi Rosie, hopefully we'll get to freeze some also. Enjoy that crumble!
ReplyDeleteActually we had stewed apple and blackberry as the blackberries were higher in the freezer than the raspberries and I didn't have time to make the crumble topping. I MUST get a batch made up and frozen. It was still scrummy though.

Hi Rosie, we had quite a few apple and blackberry crumbles during winter. Still have one big bag of blackberries left should last until we can start picking fresh ones next Feb!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how on earth you managed to have a strawberry harvest in November! then I noticed you are in the Southern Hemisphere! - I will pop in from time to time over our cold, dark Winter when nothing is going on here. I need you to provide my sunshine fix from now on!
ReplyDeleteHi Matron, will soon be heading over your side for a few weeks holiday, so we're going to miss a bit of our summer! and the yummy strawbs..
ReplyDeleteNever mind plenty of other mouths around to eat them!
