    I'm hoping to grow some blue spuds this year but they didn't have any in the garden centre when I went last week.

    We haven't tried all as yet but the purple Urenika potatoes are waxy and have quite a 'nutty' flavour. They worked well in the potato salad I made. We had some of the Kowiniwini tonight, beautiful waxy potatoes, pale cream flesh, exceptionally nice flavour. The Cliffs Kidney are also quite good but I would give the Kowiniwini top marks so far.

    Hi Amy, they are well worth growing if you have a bit of space. You can get the Maori seed potatoes from Koanga, the rest we got at RD1.

    We grew a few purple taters last year and I thought they were really good in potato salad, too! The flavor is hard to describe.

    Fascinating to see your Maori heritage potatoes. There is a strong movement here to save the older varieties, particularly red, purple and black. That reminds me of our 'Shetland Black' potato. I wonder if some of the first Scottish settlers to NZ brought them over?

    I've not heard of Shetland Black and can't find any info about them being grown here, not to say they aren't though.
