So long Clucky

I'm not one to get too emotional over chickens, but I was sad that Clucky died yesterday. She was one of our first chickens and more of a pet (we don't name them any more as they could end up as dinner!). Clucky was a purebred Indian Game, and we brought her up from Auckland with us. She was a great mother hen, hatched out several chicks, and lived to a ripe old age - 10 years, pretty good going for a chicken I should think!

  1. I can understand how you feel about your old lady chicken Clucky. We lost our 10 year old chinese silky chicken Fluffy recently too. When they are long-lived, they become part of the family I think

  2. I've never had a chicken as a pet, I know I will do oneday and will become emotionally attached, so understand your feeliings about the loss of Clucky especially as she was with you for a long time and your first.

  3. Poor Clucky, but it sounds like she had a good life. We just collected some beautiful big Barnevelder roosters from school - they are destined for a VERY short life.

  4. Hi Paola, nice to hear from you. Yes she was part of the family and will be missed. Sorry to hear about your hen Fluffy.

Hi Shaheen, thanks for your kind words, chickens do make nice pets, they are comforting and relaxing to watch. Plus the benefit of eggs!

Hi Ms Lottie, hope you enjoy some lovely fresh chicken meat! We need to put some of ours in the freezer and get some new laying hens. Clucky though was never destined for the pot! :-)

  5. aww I would be the same, some people would say it's just a chicken but it's like any pet you get attached too them.

  6. Aww what a shame the oldest we had here was 16 when she died. I think the worse for us was the loss of Maggie May our little Black Australorp hen. She was one of the family(sounds silly I know). Yes there are chickens who have a character and the rest well the freezer awaits.
