Big bug came for a visit

I've been living in NZ for 25 years now and in that time I've seen various bugs of all sizes, including the renowned Weta.

But in all that time, I've never seen one of these 'little' critters:

I say 'little' but......it wasn't little at all. Eek, this NZ native millipede (oops I mean centipede - thanks upcoming treechanger) measured up at nearly 10cm long. And with all those legs..it sure moved quickly. Hubby found it buried in a big pile of composting kumara. So long as it stays outside that's fine... Have to say it made my skin crawl somewhat!

  1. Oh, good heavens. Eeek indeed! And that weta? Quite the face there! There are pros and cons to all things. Winter in Montana is both. We can't garden half the year, its cold, icy, and snowy as heck for months, there are no citrus trees here--but we never get big freaky bugs that like those warmer climes. The winter keeps them small and in check. I realized this after running across a tarantula in southern US. Thank heavens for the snows the make Montana decidedly an impossible place for big creepy-crawlies! I do envy your fruits and flowers though! (Envy in the best possible way, of course!)

  2. eek, if its outside then I am happy but bring it indoors and its going to give me the heebee jeebees. Its quite stunning though.

Hope you well Bridget, sorry I don't come by much these days - but my job brings me back home late in the evening, that I don't spend much time blogging as i used to.

  3. Hi Beth
Fortunately although some of the bugs can bite there aren't too many poisonous ones around. We've learned to identify the 'nasty' White tailed spider, luckily they don't appear very often inside, but I always shake out my clothes just in case!! I don't think I'd manage too well with tarantulas...good that the cold keeps them away from your neck of the woods!

  4. Hi Shaheen
Thanks for dropping by. I don't get to do nearly as much reading/blogging as I'd like, never seem to find the time and when I do there's usually an 8 year old boy on the computer playing Minecraft....... Hopefully we'll get another computer soon...
Hope you are enjoying your work. You always have lovely recipes - I like to see what you've made even if I don't try them all :-)
