Yes, more fruit trees

It's coming to the end of the planting season, so today we grabbed a chance to purchase a few more trees to get in the ground before it is too late and would have to wait another year.

So we bought another pear - 'Winter Nelis', an almond - 'Monovale' (the almond we purchased a couple of years back seems to be a plum..), and 3 more fig trees: 'Brown Turkey' (a larger size tree than the one we just planted), 'French Sugar' and 'Brunoro Black'. OK, so we're going to heaps of fruit in years to come but rather that than not enough. Also our thinking is that we can feed the birds as well as ourselves, rather than worry about not getting to the fruit in time. That's the theory anyway!

We also picked up a kowhai tree (we don't actually have one on our property, but overlook several on a neighbouring farm). The kowhai are all in flower at present and are putting on a real show with their yellow flowers.

And lastly 2 kahikotea trees. We only have a single specimen in the bush on our property.

timely post! It reminded me that we wanted to plant a couple of pear trees.
I unearthed our kowhai which had been smothered in horrible jasmine ( Ok it smelt nice!) and within a couple of hours the Tuis had found it and have been back every day since. It's beautiful xx

Lots of kowhai in flower down in the bush that we overlook. Will be nice to have one nearer to us to encourage the tuis.
Happy tree planting :-)

You might be nearing the end of planting time but I am beginning to wander round planning where I could plant new fruit trees. This week has felt really autumnal (to coincide with the roof being taken off!) but next week is supposed to be back to summer again. Tree planning maybe - but I'm not quite ready for winter just yet.

Hi Rosie
Hope you get a few more warm days yet before the cold sets in!
We've had it sunny and warm in the sun but with a cold chilly wind from the south. Even had a frost last night and possibly again tonight.
Hope you get the roof done soon.

The roof is finished and the builders have started the new windows. It's very exciting AND the weather has been fanastic again - up in the thirties today. Chilly in the mornings though but I hope any frost is still a while off.

Hi Rosie
Glad to hear things are progressing with the gite, I'm sure it will be fabulous once finished. If we ever head that way in the future will bear you in mind!
Lovely to have some hot weather at the end of your summer too.
Bridget :-)
